Live view

On this page

The Live page in the sidebar is a video wall. Video is sent over WebRTC. H.264 and H.265 are forwarded as is, and latency is usually under a second.

Putting cameras on the wall

  • Left panel: when collapsed, it’s a column of thumbnails. Click one to put that camera in the selected pane. When expanded, it’s a device list arranged by group. You can search it, and you can also drag a whole group onto the wall. On narrow screens it becomes a drawer.
  • Drag to swap: drag one pane onto another and the two swap places.
  • Maximize: double-click a pane to enlarge it to the whole wall. Double-click again to go back to the split layout.

Layouts and the toolbar

The toolbar below the wall:

Control What it does
Layout 1×1, 1×2, 2×2, 2×3, 1+5, 3×3, 4×4. Phones go up to 2×2, and tablets up to 2×3
Pages Splits cameras across pages when there are more cameras than panes
Tour Advances to the next page automatically every 15 seconds
Auto-fill Picks a layout based on the number of cameras and puts every camera on the wall
Mute all Turns off sound in every pane. All video is muted by default
Snapshot Saves one JPEG for each pane on the current page
Add an empty pane Adds an empty pane

At the top of the page:

  • Layout presets: save the current layout and the camera in each pane, then switch back to it with one click. Presets are saved on Rerinku View and shared by all browsers.
  • Fullscreen: makes the whole video wall fullscreen.
  • Recent events: opens the events panel on the right. See below.

The page state is written to the address bar. When you’re watching a single camera, it’s ?sn=<device SN>. For the whole wall, the layout, page number and the device in each pane are recorded, so you can copy the address and open the same video wall on another computer.

Pane controls

Move the mouse over the video and a control bar appears:

  • Quality: switch between the camera’s main stream and substream (listed by resolution). Switching reconnects that pane.
  • Sound: turn this pane’s sound on or off.
  • Snapshot: save the current frame as a JPEG.
  • Fullscreen: make this pane fullscreen.
  • Debug HUD: shows connection stats such as bitrate, frame rate, packet loss and latency (you can also open it by adding ?debug=1 to the address).
  • PTZ: cameras that support PTZ have a PTZ drawer on the right edge of the video. See Connecting cameras.
  • Talk: only Rerinku Cam phones support talkback for now. The browser only allows the microphone when the console is opened over HTTPS or on this machine (localhost).

When the video is narrower than 420 pixels, the Snapshot and Debug HUD buttons are hidden.

Recent events panel

When you open Recent events, the latest events are listed on the right. Events from the same camera, of the same type, less than 30 seconds apart are merged into one group (a group spans at most 45 seconds), and up to 30 groups are shown. Click a row to play that event’s recording, or click View all to go to the Events page.

Disconnects and reconnecting

When video drops, you don’t need to refresh. The player reconnects on its own:

  • Network problems: retries at growing intervals of 3, 6, 12, 24 and 30 seconds.
  • Device offline: tries every 15 seconds. As soon as the device comes online, Rerinku View tells the page to reconnect right away.
  • While offline: the pane shows the device name, the reason it’s offline (“Device is not connected — waiting for it to come back” or “Connection lost — retrying”), a countdown to the next retry and a Retry now button, over the last thumbnail.
  • Frozen video: once video has played, if no new frames arrive for 4 seconds you see “Video interrupted”, and it reconnects automatically after 20 seconds.
  • Errors that need your action (wrong username or password, a codec the browser doesn’t support, a stream that doesn’t exist) are not retried automatically. The pane explains the reason.

If you close the page and open it again soon after (within roughly 10 to 30 seconds), video comes back right away, without waiting again for the camera to produce a picture.
